Why is sleep important?

In addition to maintaining wakefulness, sleep is required for normal immune and nervous system function, and for the ability to maintain normal physical and mental capacity. Sleep is essential for learning and memory, and for normal cell growth. Lack of sleep can cause depression, anxiety, irritability, and a host of other maladies.
